What is a Rack and Pinion Gear?

Within the context of a drive system, a rack and pinion system is made up of two gears. The first is the rack, also referred to as the linear gear. The second is the pinion, otherwise known as the circular gear. As is true with all gear racks, their ultimate goal is simple: together, they convert rotating movement into linear motion.

Rack and Pinions vs. Belt Drives & Ball & Screw Technology

The major difference between a rack and pinion gear and its belt drive or ball and screw counterparts has to do with the combination of high stiffness and low inertia. Because of that, a rack and pinion gear is better controlled than either of those alternatives, even when it is in the middle of highly dynamic movement.

With regard to ball and screw technology, in particular, rack and pinion gears are far more straightforward in their construction. They're capable of carrying far larger loads and there is no limit to the length they can be designed for. The major disadvantage when compared to ball and screw technology, however, is backlash. Ball screws have high precision and lower backlash, which may be a consideration depending on exactly what you need to accomplish.

Common Applications of Rack and Pinion Gears in Machinery

Because of their versatility, rack and pinion gears are found throughout various types of machinery. They're regularly used as a part of lifting mechanisms, for example, where they help create vertical or horizontal movement.

They're an invaluable part of positioning mechanisms, stoppers, and more. They are even used in most vehicle steering systems so that the driver can easily change the direction of a car. This is why you may have heard the term "rack and pinion steering" in the past. These types of gears are also found in stairlifts, rack railways, and the kinds of actuators that are employed to control valves in pipeline transport.

Types of Gear Racks

All told, there are a number of different gear racks for you to choose from depending on your needs. They include but are certainly not limited to ones like the following:

  • Spur gear. These gear racks have a cylindrical pitch surface. The gears are a part of the parallel shaft gear group.
  • Bevel gears are typically made from materials like carbon steel, stainless steel, or even specialized alloys. This is because they are regularly used in high-torque applications.
  • Helical gears are similar to spur gears in terms of design, but they operate more smoothly (and thus are more appropriate for quieter environments). The linear-shaped gear that meshes with the gear is called the helical rack.

It's also important to note that a rack and pinion gear can be fully customized to meet your unique needs, regardless of how rigid they might happen to be. If you are working on a project requiring a long length, you'll need to use multiple gear racks in a series. A solution can be designed where the tooth forms are correctly configured at the ends, leaving you with something more than capable of meeting your expectations.

Selecting the Right Gear Rack

Selecting the right gear rack will ultimately come down to the requirements of the application you'll be using it for. You need to know everything - from the pressure angle to the pitch to, finally, the gear rack. These three specifications need to be compatible with one another. If they are, the gears will fit together correctly, and you'll be able to use the gear rack as intended.

Materials and Heat Treatment

A rack and pinion gear will most commonly be made out of carbon steel. The benefit is that this is not only durable under most use cases but in the vast majority of all environments as well. Carbon steel is an ideal choice because it provides excellent strength relative to the rack tooth and the pinion itself.

High-quality rack and pinion gears are often subject to heat treatment before use. This is a special type of hardening treatment that provides both a hard outer case for each component, as well as a soft interior core. A large coil is used to heat the rack, at which point it is then submerged in an oil bath to cool. Note that only the surface of the rack is subject to this type of treatment. You don't want the core of the rack to get too hard, as during use it would become very brittle, reducing its overall lifespan.

 

 

Tips for Maintenance and Lubrication

One of the most important things to understand about rack and pinion gear is that lubrication will be pivotal for long-term success. Because of the way the system works, you're dealing with constant metal-on-metal contact. This, along with the incredibly tight tolerances between teeth, means that without lubrication the lifespan of a rack and pinion gear would be short. Many experts recommend automatic lubrication systems to keep up with the constant demand.

Failure to lubricate properly will almost always lead to diminished performance at best. At worst, it can (and often does) lead to total system failure.
